Meet Aubrey Nishikawa!

Hello! I’m Aubrey Nishikawa (she/her), an Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 150796) located in Los Angeles. I am passionate about supporting the mental & emotional wellness of adults, teens/adolescents, and the AAPI community.  I work from a client centered approach & enjoy creating and sharing healing experiences with clients. Therapy can be a beautiful and stretching experience; as we increase the capacity to experience feelings such as sadness, disappointment, or anger we also increase our capacity to experience joy, love, and hope. It would be an honor to journey with you in this process.

I specialize in working with adolescents, adults and couples navigating issues such as:

  • Anxiety and stress, Depression, Trauma

  • Asian American intergenerational trauma-identifying, honoring, grieving, and healing the impacts of cultural and/or familial trauma, patterns, beliefs

  • Asian American identify and development-exploring values, honoring self and family, grieving & processing the impacts of colonization

  • Relationships and communication issues

  • Parenting Stress

  • PREPARE/ENRICH Premarital Thearpy

  • Religious trauma and spiritual abuse in the church

  • Shame-perfectionism, imposter syndrome

  • Identity exploration, self esteem/self worth

  • Grief and loss-early pregnancy loss, pregnancy loss

  • Workplace trauma-experiencing bullying, harassment, racism, etc. in the workplace

I received my Masters of Science in counseling from California State University, Fullerton. I have experience working in private practice, group practice, and community agency settings. My clinical work has primarily consisted of providing individual and family services for POC adolescent and adults.

I work from an attachment based, client-centered approach and incorporate mindfulness based practices such as breath work, somatic awareness, and havening exercises when appropriate. I also draw upon principles from the Emotionally Focused Therapy for Individuals model to help clients heal relationships with the self. I believe nurturing a safe therapeutic relationship with clients can help calm the body’s stress responses and create helpful shifts in our interactions with the self & others. While I am trained and credentialed, I believe you are the expert of your life and therapy is done at your pace and in your timing. I strive to provide a warm & authentic presence to help folks feel seen, heard, and validated. It is my hope to help clients increase curiosity, understanding, and compassion while reducing self-criticism, shame, and blame.

As a fourth-generation Japanese American woman, I value the intersectionality of my clients’ identities and work to provide a safe space to explore identity, experience authenticity, and honor oneself. I have a special interest in exploring intergenerational trauma, cultural identity, and racial trauma as it pertains to the AAPI community. Japanese American (JA) mental health is especially close to my heart and I am particularly interested in the mental health and wellness of the sansei+ community (3rd generation and beyond). I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and I strive to provide a safe space for those who are navigating their faith/spirituality and sexual and/or gender identities.

Outside of the office I love going on road trips with friends, visiting Disneyland, and spending time with my husband & our cat, Reggie. Some nourishing practices that help me recharge include seeing my therapist, sitting by the ocean, journaling, and needlework crafting.
