Asian American Therapist in Los Angeles, California

Meet Maria Tran!

Hello! I am Maria Tran (she/her/hers), an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT#128024) located in Los Angeles County, supervised by Jenny Moon, LCSW #77266. Taking the first step towards healing can be challenging, and I am committed to holding a safe space while walking beside you on this journey. My approach to therapy is to provide an empathic view, while fostering a warm and comforting environment where you will be seen and heard. As a client centered Asian American therapist, I believe that you are the expert of your life. Together we can process through the distress and facilitate your personal growth.

I specialize in working with adults, teens and couples navigating

  • LGBTQIA+ Issues: gender identity, sexual orientation identity, internalized homo-bi-trans-phobia, low self-esteem, micro-aggressions

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Depression and Anxiety Therapy

  •  Addiction: exploring underlying causes, shame, resentment

  • Codependency: caretaker role, familial dysfunction, poor boundaries in relationships

  • Relationship issues: attachment wounds, break ups, healthy communication

  • Intergenerational Trauma and navigating family patterns, narratives and attitudes

  • Racial/ethnic identity: imposter syndrome, child of immigrants, identity exploration

  • Grief and Loss of loved one or pet

  • Work/Life Burnout and creating balance

I graduated from Pepperdine University with my Masters in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have experience working in community mental health, working with adults with diverse backgrounds throughout Los Angeles County. My therapeutic approach is humanistic, with a foundation in psychodynamic and attachment. I support clients with gaining a clearer understanding of their upbringing and uncover the impacts those experiences hold onto them.

For Couples:

Investing in your relationship is one of the most valuable decisions you can make. My intentions as a couples therapist is to provide a nonjudgemental space for you and your partner to both gain better insight into your relationship dynamic, explore emotional wounds, and restore connection. By utilizing Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT), my approach is rooted in the belief that relationships can be a source of healing and growth. In our sessions, you and your partner can expect collaborative exploration of each partner’s past wounds, enhance communication skills, and cultivate a greater understanding of your partner’s perspective to lead to relational healing. If you and your partner are ready to take the next steps in your relational healing journey, I invite you to contact me to schedule a consultation.

As a queer, first generation, Vietnamese American woman, I view therapy through an intersectionality lens to understand the layering experiences of the identities we hold. I strive to provide LGBTQIA+ BIPOC affirming spaces where your authenticity is valued. I am passionate about exploring the impacts of marginalization on our wellbeing. From navigating my own journey with mental health, I am passionate about fighting against the stigmas surrounding mental health within the Asian American community. Your mental health matters. You matter, and I am here to provide a safe space.

In my free time, I love engaging in activities that allow for creative expression, whether that be drawing, painting, shooting film photography in nature, or spending hours baking delicious sweets.
